MELBOURNE, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2025) - Powered by a game-high-tying two RBI from senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) and sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) in game two, the Mercy University softball team dropped a 10-1 decision to Gannon University before earning a 9-4 win over Cedarville University on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (3-3) snap a three-game losing streak with the game two win, while the Golden Knights (8-3) have won three of their last four games and the Yellow Jackets (5-16) have dropped three games in a row.
Game 1: Gannon 10, Mercy 1 (5 Innings)
Gannon scored four runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning to take a 9-0 lead. Mercy scored a run in the fourth inning when Miller singled and later scored following an error. Gannon scored their final run in the fourth inning to make it 10-1 and earned the 10-1 win.
Mercy was led by Miller who went 1-for-3 with a run scored and by senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) who went 1-for-2. Sophomore Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) went 1-for-2 and junior Marina Provencio (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) allowed four runs in an inning to take the loss.
Mercy had three hits and two errors and Gannon had six hits and one error.
Game 2: Mercy 9, Cedarville 4
Mercy took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 1-0. Seppala later singled home freshman Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y/Pawling) to make it 2-0 and freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip) singled home Seppala to give Mercy a 3-0 lead. Lula recorded a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) to give Mercy a 4-0 lead.
Cedarville scored three runs in the second inning to make it 4-3. Mercy plated a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Mammola singled and later scored on a Miller RBI single.
Mercy made it 6-3 in the third inning when Fox singled and scored on a Lula RBI double.
Miller singled home Murphy in the fourth inning to put the Mavericks up, 7-3.
Mercy scored two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead. Lula doubled with two outs and scored on a freshman Talia Salanto (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) RBI single to make it 8-3. Graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) then singled home Salanto to make it 9-3.
The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the seventh inning to make it 9-4, but could not score again and Mercy earned the 9-4 game two win.
Mercy was led by Miller who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and by Lula who went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Harris went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Salanto went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Seppala went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Mammola went 1-for-3 with two runs. Murphy went 1-for-4 with two runs and Fox went 2-for-3 with two runs. Jantz went 1-for-3 with an RBI and freshman Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) pitched the first 4.0 innings with three runs allowed to earn her first collegiate win. Senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) pitched the final 3.0 innings with one run allowed to earn her first save of the season.
Cedarville was led by Jordan Berry who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Maya Merrill allowed four earned runs in 2.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 13 hits and one error and Cedarville had 12 hits and four errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Monday, March 10th when they face New Haven at 4:45 p.m. and Bloomfield at 7 p.m. in Florida.
