DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2025) – Despite an RBI from senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) in game one, the Mercy University softball team dropped 14-1 and 5-0 decisions to ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (13-17, 3-5 ECC) drop three out of four meetings to the Spartans (23-16, 11-3 ECC) this season.
Game 1: St. Thomas Aquinas 14, Mercy 1 (5 Innings)
STAC scored a run in the first inning, five runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-0 lead.
Mercy scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-1. Senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third after a groundout. Lula later singled Seppala home to make it 11-1.
The Spartans scored three more runs in the fifth inning and held Mercy scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to earn the 14-1 win via the run-rule.
Mercy was led by freshman Talia Salanto (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) who went 2-for-2 and by Lula who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Seppala went 1-for-2 with a run and graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) went 1-for-2. Sophomore Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) went 1-for-2 and junior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed 11 runs in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
STAC was led by Sofia Marella who went 2-for-2 with two home runs and four RBI. Sarah Clancy pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had six hits and one error and STAC had 13 hits and no errors.
Game 2: STAC 5, Mercy 0
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when STAC scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans added two more runs in the fifth inning on a Trinadey Santiago RBI single and an Olivia Leon RBI double to take a 3-0 lead.
STAC tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Jessica Feerick, giving the Spartans a 5-0 lead.
Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving STAC the 5-0 game two win.
Mercy was led by Seppala who went 2-for-2 and by Lula who went 1-for-3. Senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) tossed a complete game with three earned runs allowed to take the loss.
STAC was led by Leon who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Madison Puppolo pitched a complete game shutout to earn the win.
Mercy had three hits and three errors and STAC had 12 hits and no errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday when they play at Queens at 2 p.m.
