DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2025) – Powered by a complete game shutout in game one from senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) and a two-run home run from senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) in game two, the Mercy University softball team earned 2-0 and 4-3 wins over ECC foe Molloy University on Monday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (18-18, 8-6 ECC) have won four games in a row for the first time since 2021 and now have their most wins in a season since 2019. Mercy sweeps the Lions (17-25, 10-6 ECC) for the first time since 2021.
Game 1: Mercy 2, Molloy 0
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) led off the inning with a double and advanced to third after a graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) sacrifice bunt. Senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Murphy, giving Mercy an early 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Mercy scored a run to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman Talia Salanto (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) singled with one out and later scored on a freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) RBI single to right field.
That would again be more than enough run support for Brandemarte who allowed just five hits in seven innings to earn the win.
Mercy was led by Salanto who went 2-for-3 with a run. Fox went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Murphy went 1-for-3 with a run. Brandemarte struck out two to earn her 10th win of the season.
Molloy was led by Alexis Montgomery who went 2-for-2. Stevie Dabbadie allowed two runs to take the loss.
Mercy had four hits and one error and Molloy had five hits and no errors.
Game 2: Mercy 4, Molloy 3
Molloy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an Amaya Page RBI single.
The score remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Mercy scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) walked with two outs and scored on a Lula two-run home run to right field.
The Mavericks added two insurance runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. DeBruhl walked with two outs and advanced to second after a Lula single. Sophomore Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) then singled with DeBruhl scoring after a throwing error by the third baseman, giving Mercy a 3-1 lead. Murphy then singled off third base, scoring Lula to give the Mavericks a 4-1 lead.
Natalie Moussa hit a two-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning to make it 4-3. However, Secoda induced a fly out in foul territory to Harris in right field, giving Mercy the 4-3 game two win and the sweep.
Mercy was led by Lula who went 2-for-3 with her second home run of the season and two RBI. Murphy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Seppala went 1-for-1. Reyer went 1-for-3 and Secoda pitched a complete game with two earned runs allowed and three strikeouts to earn her fourth win of the season. Secoda recorded her 100th career strikeout, becoming the 10th Maverick in program history to reach the mark.
Molloy was led by Moussa who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Moussa pitched a complete game with two earned runs allowed to take the loss.
