DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2025) – Powered by the game-winning goal in overtime and a game-high 18 saves from sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), the No. 14 Mercy University men's lacrosse team earned a 13-12 overtime win over ECC foe No. 15 Molloy University on Senior Day on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC), Ryan Resnick (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Ian Votta (Levittown, N.Y./NJIT) and Shane Roche (Milford, Pa./Onondaga CC) were honored for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (9-3, 6-0 ECC) have won six games in a row and secure their sixth straight ECC Regular Season Championship. Mercy defeats the Lions (13-4, 5-1 ECC) for the 17th straight time.
Mercy was led by Dorfman who scored his first career goal and made a game-high 18 saves to earn the win. Smith had a game-high-tying five points on three goals and two assists and graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College) had three goals and an assist. Graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU) had two goals and an assist and freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) had two goals. Sophomore Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and two assists and junior Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a goal. Roche and sophomore Jake Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) both had an assist and Stephenson had a team-high three caused turnovers with four ground balls. Junior Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 13-of-25 on faceoffs with five ground balls and Resnick went 2-of-4 on faceoffs with one ground ball.
Molloy was led by Brian Green who had a game-high-tying five points on two goals and three assists. Christian Michaels made 17 saves to take the loss.
Osorio gave Mercy a 1-0 lead after a Bergersen assist with 11:26 left in the first quarter. Smith made it 2-0 at the 6:50 mark after another Bergersen assist. A Mike D'Amato goal for Molloy made it 2-1 before a last second goal by Babnik from Norton gave Mercy a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.
Back-to-back goals from Osorio and Hunsberger to begin the second quarter gave Mercy a 5-1 lead with 12:14 left in the half. Goals from Jacob Faison and Luke Hickam made it 5-3 at the 10:06 mark, leading to a Mavericks timeout. Out of the timeout, Hunsberger scored, off a Smith assist, to give Mercy a 6-3 lead. A Jake Taylor goal later made it 6-4 before Smith and Osorio scored the final two goals of the quarter to give Mercy an 8-4 lead at halftime.
A Liam Taylor goal to begin the third quarter made it 8-5 with 12:32 left in the third quarter. Babnik and Smith responded with goals to give Mercy a game-high five-goal lead, 10-5, with 8:02 remaining in the quarter. Molloy scored the final three goals of the quarter to cut the Mavericks lead to two, 10-8, after three quarters.
A Bergersen goal from Osorio less than a minute into the fourth quarter gave Mercy an 11-8 lead. Dre Alexis followed with a goal to make it 11-9 before a Duchnowski man-up goal gave the Mavericks a 12-9 lead with 9:26 left in regulation. The Lions scored three goals in a row to tie the game at 12-12 after a Green goal with 1:59 remaining. Molloy won the ensuing faceoff and Dorfman made two saves to keep the game tied. Neither team would score again in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Molloy won the opening faceoff in the overtime period and had three shots before Dorfman made a save and gained possession for Mercy. Dorfman would fire a shot from just in front of his own goal that found the back of an empty net to give Mercy the 13-12 overtime win and the ECC Regular Season Championship.
Mercy held a 43-42 edge in shots and went 15-of-29 on faceoffs. Molloy held a 35-26 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 30th when they host an ECC Championship Semifinal at 3 p.m.
