DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2025) – Powered by a career-high 14 saves from junior Olivia LaMonica (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) and a game-high three goals and four caused turnovers from freshman Ashlinn Kelly (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 25 Mercy University women's lacrosse team earned a 10-8 win over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on First Responders Day on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (9-6, 5-1 ECC) have won four of their last five games and earn a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship for the fifth time in program history. Mercy defeats the Redhawks (7-7, 5-1 ECC) for the first time since 2023. The Mavericks have secured the No. 1 seed in next week's ECC Championship and will host No. 4 seed Daemen University in a Semifinal matchup on Wednesday, April 30th at 12 p.m.
Mercy was led by LaMonica who made a game-high-tying 14 saves to earn the win. LaMonica recorded her 200th career save, becoming the fifth Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Kelly had a game-high three goals and four caused turnovers and senior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) had two goals and two assists. Sophomore Juliana Talenti (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had two goals and an assist and sophomore Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and freshman Kayden Meyer (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) both had a goal and an assist. Freshman Marena Morales (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) also scored and junior Maeghan Callow (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had an assist. Senior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a game-high six ground balls and six draw controls with three caused turnovers. Junior Emily Marino (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Annie Mulhall who had two goals and an assist. Shawna Lesmerises made a game-high-tying 14 saves to take the loss.
Goals from Lia MacDougall and Emma Blumenstock to open the game gave Roberts Wesleyan a 2-0 lead with 10:10 left in the first quarter. Back-to-back goals from Kelly tied the game at 2-2 with 5:40 on the clock. A Talenti goal gave Mercy a 3-2 lead and Kelly recorded her third goal of the quarter to put the Mavericks up, 4-2, at the 4:37 mark. Goals from Kadie Tierney and Mulhall tied the score at 4-4 after the first quarter.
An Ella Dossier goal to open the second quarter gave the Redhawks a 5-4 lead at the 13:23 mark. Wallace, Talenti, and Meyer recorded the final three goals of the quarter to give Mercy a 7-5 lead at halftime.
Two goals from Hansen and a goal from Morales in the third quarter gave Mercy a 10-5 lead, heading to the fourth quarter.
The Redhawks scored three goals in the fourth quarter to make it 10-8 with 1:34 left to play. Mercy came up with a key defensive stop late as Marino caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball to give the Mavericks the 10-8 win.
Roberts Wesleyan held a 30-29 edge in shots and Mercy held a 15-14 edge in ground balls and a 13-8 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 30th when they host Daemen in an ECC Championship Semifinal at 12 p.m.
