Seppala and Lula Record an RBI as Softball Hosts Queens for Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2025) – Despite an RBI from seniors Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) and Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) in game two, the Mercy University softball team dropped 2-0 and 7-2 decisions to ECC foe Queens College on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks honored Seppala, Lula, Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) and Kimberlee Childs (Queens, N.Y./University of Bridgeport) for their contributions to the program.

The Mavericks (22-20, 12-8 ECC) see their eight-game winning streak come to an end and drop three out of four meetings to the Knights (9-27, 5-15 ECC) this season. Mercy has earned the No. 2 seed in next week's ECC Championship and will face No. 3 seed Molloy in an opening round game on Thursday, May 1st at St. Thomas Aquinas College at 2:30 p.m.

Game 1: Queens 2, Mercy 0

Queens took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run by Amanda Baez.

The Mavericks recorded only two hits in the game and were unable to score, giving Queens the game one win.

Mercy was led by Seppala who went 1-for-1 and by sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) who went 1-for-3. Brandemarte tossed a complete game with no earned runs allowed and five strikeouts to take the loss.

Queens was led by Baez who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Caylea Campbell tossed a complete game shutout to earn the win.

Mercy had two hits and one error and Queens had six hits and no errors.

Game 2: Queens 7, Mercy 2

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Baez homered to left field, giving Queens a 1-0 lead.

Mercy tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning. Sophomore Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Lula RBI single to right field.

The Knights scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Queens added four more runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-1 lead. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-2. Murphy doubled with one out in the seventh and later scored on a Seppala RBI single. A groundout to third ended the game, giving Queens the 7-2 game two win and the sweep.

Mercy was led by Seppala who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and by Lula who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Murphy went 2-for-3 and DeBruhl went 2-for-3. Sophomore Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) went 1-for-3 and junior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed three runs in 6.0 innings to take the loss.

Queens was led by Kadie Cain who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sam Voskinarian pitched a complete game with two runs allowed to earn the win.

Mercy had eight hits and two errors and Queens had eight hits and no errors.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, May 1st when they face No. 3 seed Molloy in the opening round of the ECC Championship at 2:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
