Sanchez Makes Game-High Three Saves as Men's Soccer Plays at No. 19 Southern New Hampshire

HOOKSETT, N.H. — Despite a game-high three saves from junior Mateo Sanchez (Anderson, S.C./Converse University), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team dropped a 2-0 decision at No. 19 Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon at Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.

The Mavericks (1-1) suffer their first loss of the season and fall to the Penmen (2-0) for the third straight season.

The home team opened the scoring in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second half while limiting the visitors to four shots. Southern N.H.'s defense held strong, with goalkeeper Alvaro Garcia recording a shutout by making two saves. Sanchez tallied three saves in a losing effort.

The first half between Mercy and Southern N.H. saw a disciplined defensive effort by both teams, marked by an early goal from Caceres in the 28th minute, assisted by Preus. Southern N.H. maintained offensive pressure with three consecutive shots between the 31st and 38th minutes, but Mercy's goalkeeper Sanchez made key saves, including a notable stop against Martin Zapata's attempt. Despite Mercy's efforts to find an equalizer, the period ended with Southern N.H. holding a 1-0 lead.

The second period began with Southern N.H. maintaining pressure, culminating in a goal by Philipp Herrmann in the 57th minute, assisted by Alex Pons, increasing their lead to 2-0. Sanchez made a crucial save in the 62nd minute, stopping a shot from Tyler Kraft. Mercy then attempted to close the gap with several offensive efforts, including a shot on goal by junior Mario de Roque Zazón (Zaragoza, Spain/Newman University) in the 69th minute, but it was denied by Southern N.H.'s Garcia. Despite Mercy's attempts, including a late shot by de Roque Zazón at the 85th minute, Southern N.H. held their defensive line, maintaining the 2-0 advantage until the end of the game.

Southern N.H. held a 9-4 edge in shots, a 6-2 edge in shots on goal and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Looking ahead, Mercy will host Adelphi University in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., on September 10. The match is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
