STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Powered by a goal and an assist from senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College) and the game-winning goal in the 74th minute from junior Joel Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Mount Aloysius College), the No. 18 Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 3-1 win at ECC foe College of Staten Island on Saturday afternoon at Dolphins Soccer Park.
The Mavericks (9-2-3, 3-1-1 ECC) are 4-0-2 in their last six games and defeat the Dolphins (4-5-2, 2-2-2 ECC) on the road for the second straight time. Mercy now has their most wins since 2024. The Mavericks are now 4-0-3 on the road this season.
Mercy threatened early with Hollis hitting the left post in the 18th minute. The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Hollis assisted on a senior Pau Ramon (Mallorca, Spain/Southeastern CC) goal, giving Mercy an early lead.
Staten Island evened the score at 1-1 in the 36th minute on a Feyisope Osifeso goal, assisted by Peterson Larose. The score remained tied at 1-1 at halftime.
Senior Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC) and junior Santiago Dutilh (Santiago, Chile/Everest School) recorded shots on goal to begin the second half. The score remained 1-1 until the 74th minute when Martinez found the back of the net following a Lund-Iversen pass, giving Mercy a 2-1 lead.
Hollis later made it 3-1 with under 30 seconds left after a cross from junior Aalon Wilson-Wright (Aranguez, Trinidad & Tobago/Tiffin University), following a pass from Dutilh, giving the Mavericks the 3-1 win.
Mercy was led by Hollis who scored his fourth goal of the season and dished out his team-leading ninth assist of the year. Martinez netted his third goal of the year, and second game-winning goal and Ramon added his second goal of the season. Lund-Iversen dished out his sixth assist of the year. Wilson-Wright and Dutilh both recorded their first assists of the year, and graduate student Sean Green (Asheville, N.C./Lees-McRae College) made one save to earn the win.
Staten Island was led by Osifeso who scored and by Carlos Romero Astacio who made a game-high four saves.
Mercy held an 18-10 edge in shots, a 7-2 edge in shots on goal and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 14th when they play at Pace at 7 p.m.
