DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a goal and an assist from senior Sarah Lill Hanks (Skedsmokorset, Norway/High Point University) and a career-high-tying eight saves from junior Heiddis Sigurdardottir (Garðabær, Iceland/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley), the Mercy University Women's Soccer Team earned a 3-0 win over regionally-ranked Saint Anselm College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-2-3) have won three games in a row and defeat the 2025 NCAA Tournament participant Hawks (4-4-1) for the second straight year. Senior Femke Demets (Avelgem, Belgium/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) got Mercy on the scoreboard where she fired a shot from outside the box, off a pass from freshman Astrid Borglund (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) in the 47th minute, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Junior Ana Polychroniades (Smithtown, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory) later gave Mercy a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute following an assist from Hanks, after a Maverick corner kick.
Hanks put the Mavericks up 3-0 in the 63rd minute when she deflected in a junior Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) free kick. Sigurdardottir finished with six saves in the final 30 minutes to preserve the shutout, giving Mercy the 3-0 win.
Mercy was led by Hanks who scored her first collegiate goal and added her first assist of the year. Sigurdardottir made a game-high and career-high-tying eight saves to earn her third win of the season and third shutout. Demets scored her second goal of the year and first game-winning goal of the season. Polychroniades recorded her third goal of the season and Metzger dished out her fourth assist of the year. Borglund added her first collegiate assist.
Saint Anselm was led by Warner who made four saves to take the loss.
