MELBOURNE, Fla. – Powered by a team-high three RBI on the day from junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and wins from sophomore Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), the Mercy University Softball Team concluded its Florida trip with an 8-1 win over Saint Michael's College and a 4-1 win over Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (3-5) snap a three-game losing streak, while the Purple Knights (1-6) have lost three games in a row and the Panthers (7-12) have dropped four games in a row.
Game 1: Mercy 8, Saint Michael's 1
Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) singled and stole second before scoring on a freshman Makayla Rady (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) RBI single to make it 1-0. Rady later scored to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks added a run in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) walked and later scored after junior Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) reached on an error.
Saint Michael's scored their lone run in the fourth inning to make it 3-1. Mercy scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. Freshman Madelyn Perrone (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Reyer then walked and sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) later singled home Perrone to make it 4-1. Murphy then hit a two-run double to right center, scoring Reyer and Mammola to give Mercy a 6-1 lead. Jackson then singled and Murphy scored on an error by the pitcher to make it 7-1. Junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) later singled home Jackson to put the Mavericks up, 8-1.
McSweeney held Saint Michael's scoreless for the remainder of the game to give Mercy the 8-1 win.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and by Mammola who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Miller went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Rady went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jackson went 1-for-2 with two runs and Coluccio went 1-for-3. Perrone went 1-for-3 with a run and Reyer went 1-for-1 with two runs. McSweeney pitched a complete game with one run allowed and four strikeouts to earn her first win of the year.
Saint Michael's was led by Madi Liimatainen who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. CJ Davidson allowed seven earned runs in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 10 hits and one error, and Saint Michael's had four hits and three errors.
Game 2: Mercy 4, Ohio Dominican 1
Ohio Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when Mercy scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Rady led off the inning with a single and Reyer doubled home Rady to tie the game at 1-1. Mammola later singled home Reyer to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. Murphy then doubled home Mammola to put the Mavericks up, 3-1. Miller later singled home Murphy to put the Mavericks up 4-1.
Secoda held the Panthers scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to give Mercy the 4-1 win.
Mercy was led by Mammola who went 1-for-2 with an RBI and by Murphy who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Miller went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Reyer went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jackson went 1-for-1 and Coluccio went 1-for-3. Rady went 1-for-3 with a run and freshman Mya Marelli (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) allowed one run in 2.0 innings to take a no-decision. Secoda pitched 5.0 scoreless innings of relief with two hits allowed and three strikeouts to earn her first win of the season.
Ohio Dominican was led by Avery Mueller who went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Alyvia Lawrentz allowed four runs in 4.1 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had seven hits and one error and Ohio Dominican had four hits and no errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 24th when they host STAC for a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
