DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a walk-off RBI single from sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) in the ninth inning of game two, the Mercy University Softball Team dropped an 8-4 decision in game one before earning a 4-3 walk-off win in the nightcap against ECC foe Queens College on Friday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (21-15, 10-6 ECC) win three out of the four meetings against the Knights (9-22, 3-9 ECC) this season.
Game 1: Queens 8, Mercy 4
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) tripled and later scored on an error by the right fielder.
Queens scored four runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.
The Knights added a run in the fourth inning to build a 5-1 lead and scored another run in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Queens tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning to take an 8-1 lead.
Mercy scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-4. Jackson and junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) singled before junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) hit a three-run home run to right center. A pair of flyouts ended the game, giving Queens the 8-4 game-one win.
Mercy was led by Miller who went 2-for-4 with her first home run of the season and three RBI. Jackson went 4-for-4 with two runs and Murphy went 2-for-4 with a run. Sophomore Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) allowed five runs in 4.0 innings to take the loss.
Queens was led by Allie Parascandola who went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Nellie Donahue pitched a complete game with three earned runs allowed and eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Mercy had eight hits and two errors and Queens had 16 hits and one error.
Game 2: Mercy 4, Queens 3 (9 Innings)
Queens scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Mercy scored a run in the second inning to make it 2-1. Sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) walked to lead off the inning and scored on a sophomore Kayla Zimmerman (Brookfield, Conn./American International College) RBI single.
Queens added a run in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks scored a run in the fifth inning to make it 3-2. Fox singled with two outs and later scored on a freshman Makayla Rady (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) RBI single.
Mercy tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the sixth inning. Mammola singled and later advanced to second and stole third before scoring on a Murphy RBI single.
The game remained tied heading to the bottom of the ninth. Rady walked and junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) singled to put runners on first and third. Mammola then recorded an infield single, bringing home Rady as the winning run, giving Mercy the 4-3 game-two walk-off win.
Mercy was led by Mammola who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and by Murphy who went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Rady went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Zimmerman went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Fox went 1-for-3 with two runs and Miller went 1-for-5. Junior Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) went 1-for-5 and Reyer went 2-for-4. Senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) pitched a complete game with three runs allowed and two strikeouts to earn her eighth win of the season.
Queens was led by Carla Chiaramonte who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Caylea Campbell allowed two runs in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 11 hits and no errors and Queens had nine hits and one error.
Tomorrow's doubleheader against Molloy has been postponed due to inclement weather.
