EDINBORO, Pa. – Powered by goals from freshman Astrid Borglund (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) and junior Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), the No. 25 Mercy University Women's Soccer Team earned a 2-0 win at Edinboro University in their 2026 season opener on Thursday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium.
The Mavericks (1-0) win their second straight season opener and defeat the Fighting Scots (0-1) in the schools' first-ever meeting.
Edinboro recorded the game's first shot on goal in the 10th minute, but junior Heiddis Sigurdardottir (Garðabær, Iceland/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) was able to make the stop to keep the game scoreless. Senior Sarah Lill Hanks (Skedsmokorset, Norway/High Point University) and freshman Connor Leahy (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) rattled off back-to-back shots on goal in the 12th and 17th minutes, but Edinboro goalie Brianna Garey stopped both to keep the game 0-0.
Senior Ella Gallino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug), Metzger and sophomores Rosa Pistone (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and Gracie DiPalo (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) each produced shots on goal that were stopped by Garey and Sigurdardottir made two more saves in the half to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Mercy wasted little time breaking the scoreless tie as Borglund scored her first collegiate goal in the 47th minute, off the first career assist from Leahy, to put the Mavericks up, 1-0. Metzger later gave Mercy a 2-0 lead following a junior Blake Goldstein (Oceanside, N.Y./Long Island University) assist in the 56th minute.
Edinboro missed an opportunity to score in the 68th minute when a Jada Cole penalty kick went high after a Mercy red card. Sigurdardottir made another save in the 85th minute and a team save in the 88th minute preserved the shutout as the Mavericks earned a 2-0 win in their 2026 season opener. Mercy held Edinboro scoreless for most of the second half, despite playing down a woman from the 68th minute to the end of the game.
Mercy was led by Borglund who scored her first collegiate goal and the game-winning goal in her first collegiate game. Metzger recorded her 13th career goal and had a team-high three shots on goal. Leahy dished out her first collegiate assist in her first career game and Goldstein produced her second assist as a Maverick. Sigurdardottir made four saves in her Mercy debut to post the shutout win.
Edinboro was led by Cole who had a team-high three shots on goal. Garey made a game-high seven saves to take the loss.
Mercy held a 12-9 edge in shots, a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, and corner kicks were tied at 6-6.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, August 30th when they host Goldey-Beacom in their home opener at 1 p.m.
