DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by two goals and an assist from senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 3-0 win over American International College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field, giving Head Coach Pedro Velazquez his 100th career win.
The Mavericks (5-1-1) have won four games in a row and defeat the Yellow Jackets (2-2-2) for the third straight year. Velazquez, a 2012 Mercy graduate, recorded his 100th career win as Mercy's head coach, becoming the second coach in program history to reach the milestone. Velazquez is currently 100-39-30 in 10 seasons as Mercy's head coach. He has led the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances and two ECC Tournament Championships and has been named ECC Coach of the Year twice. Mercy has won four games in a row for the first time since 2022.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when junior Philip Hauge (Bergen, Norway/Central Connecticut State University) headed in a Hollis free kick. Junior Harry Cooke (Saint Albans, England/D'Youville University) made a save in the 16th minute to keep the Mavericks ahead 1-0.
The Mavericks extended their lead to 2-0 in the 43rd minute when senior Diego Guzmán (Santiago, Chile/Everest School) fed a through ball down the right side for Hollis, who fired the ball into the net, giving Mercy a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Mercy made it 3-0 in the 68th minute when a senior Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC) shot was stopped by AIC goalkeeper Javier Sola Martinez, but Hollis finished off the rebound, giving the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
Cooke and freshman Dean Yamin (East Williston, N.Y./The Wheatley School) closed the half with saves to preserve the shutout, giving Mercy the 3-0 win and Velazquez his 100th career win as Mercy's head coach.
Mercy was led by Hollis who recorded a career-high five points on two goals and an assist. Hollis now has two goals and a team-high five assists on the year. Hauge produced his second goal of the season and Guzmán dished out his second assist of the year. Lund-Iversen picked up his second assist of the year and now has a team-high 18 points. Cooke made three saves in 78:41 minutes of action to earn his team-leading third win of the season. Yamin made his first collegiate save in his collegiate debut in 11:19 minutes of action, to preserve the shutout.
AIC was led by Sola Martinez who had a game-high six saves.
Mercy held a 14-9 edge in shots, a 9-4 edge in shots on goal and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 19th when they host STAC in their ECC opener at 1 p.m.
