PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite a team-high four shots from junior Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur), the RV Mercy University Women's Soccer Team dropped a 3-1 decision at regionally-ranked Pace University on Wednesday night at Northwell Stadium.
The Mavericks (3-2-2) fall to 0-2 against NE10 foes this season, while the regionally-ranked Setters (5-1) have won three games in a row.
Metzger forced Pace goalkeeper Siena McCree to make two early saves in the 5th and 16th minute. However, the Setters scored the game's first goal in the 29th minute when Meredith Klosek scored to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Junior Blake Goldstein (Oceanside, N.Y./Long Island University) made McCree stop another shot in the 35th minute before Ava Jordan scored for the Setters in the 43rd minute, giving Pace a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Senior Femke Demets (Avelgem, Belgium/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) recorded a shot on goal in the 78th minute that was stopped by McCree and Metzger hit the crossbar in the 80th minute. The Mavericks scored in the 86th minute when a freshman Khloe Welch (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa Central) free kick was deflected into the goal by a Setter defender for an own goal, making it 2-1.
Jordan gave Pace an insurance goal in the 89th minute, making it 3-1. The Setters held off a late Mavericks charge, earning the 3-1 win.
Mercy was led by Metzger who had a team-high two shots on goal and Goldstein, Demets and freshman Astrid Borglund (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) also had a shot on goal. Junior Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) allowed two goals in the first half to take the loss. Junior Heiddis Sigurdardottir (Garðabær, Iceland/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) made two saves in the second half with one goal allowed.
Pace was led by Jordan who scored a game-high two goals and by McCree who made five saves to record the win.
Shots were tied at 11-11 and shots on goal were tied at 5-5. Pace held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 19th when they host STAC in their ECC opener at 3:30 p.m.
