COLONIA, N.J. – Mercy University Women's Soccer freshman Astrid Borglund (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) has been named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Women's Soccer Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week for Week Five. Junior Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) and senior Femke Demets (Avelgem, Belgium/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) have been tabbed to the Honor Roll.
Borglund recorded a team-high four goals and eight points as Mercy went 1-0-1 on the week. The freshman opened the week scoring the game-tying goal at Southern New Hampshire in the Mavericks' 1-1 draw against the Penmen. Borglund ended the week with her second hat trick in a week, scoring three goals, including the game-winning goal, in Mercy's 4-0 win at Daemen on Saturday. The freshman is now tied for the ECC lead in goals and points and has scored seven goals in her last three games.
Becker went 1-0 on the week in goal with three saves to record the shutout win in Mercy's 4-0 win at Daemen on Saturday.
Demets had a team-high two assists on the week and helped lead a Mercy backline to a shutout win at Daemen on Saturday as the Mavericks went 1-0-1. The senior assisted on the game-tying goal in Mercy's 1-1 draw at Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday. Demets ended the week with an assist and helped lead a Mavericks backline that posted a shutout in the 4-0 win at Daemen on Saturday.
Borglund has now been named ECC Offensive Player of the Week twice this season and has now earned three awards on the year. The awards are the second this season for Becker and Demets this season. Mercy has now earned 12 awards on the year.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
