Mercy Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener to UNH
The Mercy College men's basketball team lost the season opener to the University of New Haven today by a score of 76-56. The Mavericks start the season 0-1, and the Chargers are 1-0 with the win.
In the first half, New Haven got out to an early 7-1 lead, but a three pointer, followed by a lay-up by senior Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) brought the Mavericks within one. Jeremy Williams hit a three for UNH, and the Chargers would score 10 of the next 12 points to take the 17-8 lead. The first half would end with New Haven up 36-24.
New Haven got off to a strong start in the second half, with Justin Exum hitting back-to-back three pointers to bring the score to 42-24. Mercy fought back, with a lay-up by James Mindingall (Randolph, N.J./Randolph ), followed by a lay-up then jumper by Hasan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./ Iowa Central CC) to bring the score to 42-30. The Chargers called a time-out, and came out shooting. A three pointer by Mike Stys, followed by two by Sean Harris gave New Haven the 53-32 lead. Baskets were exchanged the rest of the way, with New Haven taking the game, 76-56.
On the day, Powell and Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan) each had ten points.
The Mavericks next game is at home on Nov. 16, against Caldwell College.
