Mercy Men's Basketball Falls at Bridgeport
The Mercy College men's basketball team held tough with
the University of Bridgeport on Saturday, but eventually lost by a
77-55 score. Mercy is now 0-5 on the nascent season, including 0-2
in the East Coast Conference, while UB is 2-2 overall, and 2-0 in
the ECC.
The score was tight early on, with the score tied five times in
the first six minutes of play. UB then built a seven point lead
with 10:07 to go in the first half before junior James Mindingall (Randolph,
N.J./Randolph) hit a layup and senior Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal
Spellman) made back-to-back shots to knot the score at
24-24 with 8:06 to play. Garicia would score all of his 12 points
in the first half. The teams traded buckets for the rest of the
half, and, at the intermission, UB led 39-36.
The Purple Knights would score the first seven points after the
break to extend the lead to double digits. From there, Mercy would
never recover.
Senior Hasan Powell (Bridgeport,
Conn./Central) led the team in scoring with 13 points,
while sophomore Colin Senior (Hackensack,
N.J./Hackensack) added ten.
Bridgeport's Jermaine Washington led all scorers with 19
points, followed by teammate Josh Martin with 18.
Mercy returns to play on Wednesday, December 8, at Queens
College at 7:30 p.m.
