Mercy Men's Basketball Loses to STAC 72-60
The Mercy College men's basketball team lost at St. Thomas
Aquinas College on Saturday, 72-60. STAC improves to 4-12 on the
season (4-7 East Coast Conference), while Mercy falls to 0-16 (0-11
ECC).
The Mavericks got off to a hot start, and built a 10-5 lead just
4:36 into the contest, on a jumper by sophomore LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y./Archbishop
Molloy). But an 11-1 run for STAC catapulted them into
the lead, and Mercy would trail for the rest of the game.
STAC's Jamie Blanchard made a layup in the waning seconds of
the first half, and the hosts led 35-20.
In those first 20 minutes, Mercy shot just 32% from the field,
making just eight field goals. STAC, meanwhile, shot 55.6% from the
field, connecting on 15 shots.
The Spartans led by as many as 24 in the second half, before
Mercy closed the gap to 12 as the game expired.
For the game, three Mavericks scored in double figures, led by
senior Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan),
who had 13. His classmates Hasan Powell (Bridgeport,
Conn./Central) and Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal
Spellman) had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
STAC was led by Justin Brown, who poured in 19 points, and
Blanchard, who scored 18.
Mercy plays again on Wednesday, January 26, at Molloy
College.
