The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped their East Coast Conference matchup today at NYIT, 87-71.  The Mavericks, now 0-11, including 0-6 in the ECC continue to look for their first win, while the Bears improve to 5-5, including 3-3 in the ECC.

NYIT took the early lead in the first half.  A layup by Kayvon Roberts put the Bears up 11-4.  Mercy answered back, and was able to take the 25-24 lead off a layup by Hasan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Central).  It would be the only lead the Mavericks would have on the day.   The Bears held the 40-33 lead at halftime.

After NYIT took the 50-42 lead early in the second half, the Mavericks answered back with six straight points to cut the difference to two.  The Bears responded with their own 10-0 run, to take the 60-48 lead.  Baskets were exchanged the rest of the way, with NYIT taking the game 87-71.

Powell led the Mavericks with 14 points.  James Mindingall (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added 13 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Monsignor Scanlan) had 12 points.  Roberts led the Bears with 17 points.  NYIT's Russell Holloway had the game's only double-double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Mavericks return to action in Dobbs Ferry on Monday, Jan. 11, when they host Dowling.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
