Men's Basketball Falls to NYIT, 87-71
The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped their East Coast
Conference matchup today at NYIT, 87-71. The Mavericks, now
0-11, including 0-6 in the ECC continue to look for their first
win, while the Bears improve to 5-5, including 3-3 in the ECC.
NYIT took the early lead in the first half. A layup by
Kayvon Roberts put the Bears up 11-4. Mercy answered back,
and was able to take the 25-24 lead off a layup by
Hasan Powell (Bridgeport,
Conn./Central). It would be the only lead the
Mavericks would have on the day. The Bears held the 40-33
lead at halftime.
After NYIT took the 50-42 lead early in the second half, the
Mavericks answered back with six straight points to cut the
difference to two. The Bears responded with their own 10-0
run, to take the 60-48 lead. Baskets were exchanged the rest
of the way, with NYIT taking the game 87-71.
Powell led the Mavericks with 14 points.
James Mindingall (Randolph,
N.J./Randolph) added 13 points and grabbed five
rebounds, and
Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Monsignor
Scanlan) had 12 points. Roberts led the Bears
with 17 points. NYIT's Russell Holloway had the game's only
double-double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Mavericks return to action in Dobbs Ferry on Monday, Jan.
11, when they host Dowling. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30
p.m.
