Volleyball Falls to Le Moyne in Four Sets

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2011) – On Sunday afternoon, the Mercy College volleyball team faced off against Le Moyne College in its third match in two days looking to break a four-game losing streak full of bad luck. After falling in the first two sets, the Mavericks pulled one back and looked to have momentum on their side but allowed a Dolphins rally that proved just enough for Le Moyne to take the victory and improve its record to 10-5, while the Mavericks fell to 5-11.
Freshman outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) capped another excellent week with a massive 26-kill performance in the four-set match, upping her average per set to 4.52 and putting herself into position to possibly break into the top 10 in Division II when rankings are released early this week.
The Mavericks came out flat in the first set, losing decisively by a score of 25-19, and took some time to get going in the second but forced extra points before falling 27-25. They dominated most of the third set to pull back into the match and clearly had momentum on their side, but hit a snag late in the set. They managed to win it 25-21, but momentum had shifted and the fourth set illustrated that as Le Moyne took the match, 25-20 in the fourth set.
Three Dolphins hit double-digit kills, with junior middle hitter Morgan McDermott (Camillus, N.Y.) leading the way with 16 and junior outside hitter Bethany Fabian (Lake View, N.Y.) posting a double-double in kills and digs, with 10 each. Junior setter Katie Plukas (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman setter Megan Maisonet (Pine Bush, N.Y.) combined for 41 assists as the Dolphins offense proved brutally efficient, hitting .342 for the match.
White's 26 kills led the match as freshmen setters McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) and Michala Askew (Ringgold, Ga.) supplied her and the rest of the Mavericks with 34 assists. Askew led the match with five aces, most of which she reeled off during the decisive run in the third set, and added seven digs, while freshman libero Ericka Kane (Glendale, Ariz.) led the Mavericks with nine digs.
Head Coach Alan Clements and the Mavericks will return to conference play looking to break their losing streak and get their first ECC win against C.W. Post on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
