Mercy Men's Basketball Team Drops Contest at Bridgeport
The Mercy College men's basketball team suffered a 100-61
loss at the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday evening. Mercy
drops to 1-20, including 1-15 in the East Coast Conference. UB, who
sits atop the ECC, improves to 13-8 overall, and 13-3 in the
ECC.
Bridgeport jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first 84
seconds of the contest,
as Mercy missed its first few shots. Senior Hasan Powell (Bridgeport,
Conn./Central) made consecutive jumpers for Mercy to
cut the lead to 7-4. Minutes later, a Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal
Spellman) layup at the 13:06 mark gave the Mavericks a
14-13 lead. After a Purple Knights basket, Garcia hit a
three-pointer, and Mercy led 17-15.
The teams traded baskets, and the lead swapped several times.
Senior Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan)
made a three-pointer at the 10:06 mark, and Mercy led 25-23. But UB
went on a 16-4 lead to take a commanding 39-29 lead. Sophomore LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y./Archbishop
Molloy) made a basket before UB went on a 9-0 run to
seize control of the game. At the half, UB led 52-33.
In the second half, the Purple Knights opened up with an 11-2,
and Mercy would struggle to keep pace. The lead was as large as 41
in the second half, as UB settled in for the 100-51 victory.
For Mercy, 13 different Mavericks recorded points, led by Powell
and Garcia, who each had 11.
Mercy continues the back end of a two-game road trip on
Saturday, February 12, at Queens College.
