Bridgeport jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first 84 seconds of the contest, as Mercy missed its first few shots. Senior Hasan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn./Central) made consecutive jumpers for Mercy to cut the lead to 7-4. Minutes later, a Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) layup at the 13:06 mark gave the Mavericks a 14-13 lead. After a Purple Knights basket, Garcia hit a three-pointer, and Mercy led 17-15.

The teams traded baskets, and the lead swapped several times. Senior Ed Wilson (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan) made a three-pointer at the 10:06 mark, and Mercy led 25-23. But UB went on a 16-4 lead to take a commanding 39-29 lead. Sophomore LeBrandon Smith (Jamaica, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) made a basket before UB went on a 9-0 run to seize control of the game. At the half, UB led 52-33.

In the second half, the Purple Knights opened up with an 11-2, and Mercy would struggle to keep pace. The lead was as large as 41 in the second half, as UB settled in for the 100-51 victory.

For Mercy, 13 different Mavericks recorded points, led by Powell and Garcia, who each had 11.

Mercy continues the back end of a two-game road trip on Saturday, February 12, at Queens College.
