BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2012) – Sophomore outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) recorded the 1,000th kill of her career as the Mercy College volleyball team faced East Coast Conference foe LIU Poston Tuesday night.

White smacked 17 kills in the match to bring her career total to exactly 1,000 as the Mavericks fell, 3-1, in an incredible defensive display that saw both teams combine to post a whopping 132 digs.  White also currently ranks seventh in Division II with 4.41 kills-per-set.

Mercy drops to 3-19 overall and 0-11 in the ECC, while LIU Post improves to 19-11 (8-3).

The Mavericks stormed out to an early 8-2 lead in the first set but the Pioneers rode a 9-1 run to take the lead and never gave it up, winning the set 25-18.  Mercy bounced back with another early lead in the second set but once again LIU Post managed to tie things up midway through.  The Mavericks held on for a while but the Pioneers came up with another seven unanswered points to pull ahead, 20-15, and win the set, 25-19.

Both teams contested the third set tightly up to 12-12 until Mercy rattled off a 7-1 run to go up 19-13 and held the margin to a 25-18 victory to cut the match deficit to one.  LIU Post jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth set and led until a 7-2 run by the Mavericks evened things at 21-21.  LIU Post was not about to gamble on a fifth set, however, and took four of the final five points to end the match.

White's 17 kills led the Mavericks while sophomore setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) made 35 assists and senior middle blocker Kassy Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y.) recorded 2.5 total blocks.  Junior libero Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif.) led the squad with a career-high 18 digs while junior defensive specialist Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) made 12 digs.

Junior middle blocker Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) led the Pioneers with 15 kills and added 11 digs to record the double-double while freshman setter Monica Amador (Cedar Park, Texas) and sophomore setter Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) combined to make 24 assists. Freshman libero Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) led a quartet of Pioneers with 20 digs and served up four aces.

Head Coach Taneisha Cantave and the Mavericks will head to ECC rival Molloy College (7-16, 5-6) on Thursday, Oct. 25 for a 6:00 p.m. opening serve.
