Baseball Plays Felician in Non-Conference Match-up
Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. (Apr. 10, 2013) - On Wednesday afternoon, the Mercy College baseball team traveled to New Jersey to battle non-conference opponent Felician College, falling, 4-3. With the win, the Golden Falcons improved to 11-22, while the Mavericks slipped to 6-23-1.
Mercy took an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from junior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.), driving in senior Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y.).
The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning, when junior Jeremy Lovera (Carmel, N.Y.) tripled down the leftfield line, bringing home fellow junior Andrew Kendel (Maywood, N.J.). However, the Golden Falcons answered back in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game at 2-2 with a run-scoring triple of their own and an RBI groundout.
In the sixth, Mercy took a 3-2 lead when junior Nicholas Fiore (Wantagh, N.Y.) smacked an RBI double to left field, plating sophomore Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).
Felician responded in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game once again with an RBI single. Another RBI single in the seventh would give Felician a 4-3 lead; one it wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game.
On the hill for Mercy, junior starter Brian McNamara (Brewster, N.Y.) went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Senior reliever Ray Thaisz (Staten Island, N.Y.) was strapped with the loss, pitching two frames and surrendering two runs on five hits. Senior Tom Cummings (Coatesville, Pa.) hurled a shutout inning of relief.
Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action on Friday, Apr. 12 when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
