Baseball Wins 2 of 3 From LIU Post

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. / FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 6-7, 2013) - This past weekend, the Mercy College baseball team defeated LIU Post two out of three games to earn East Coast Conference victories. On Saturday, the Pioneers won Game 1 of the doubleheader, 7-0, but the Mavericks took Game 2, 1-0. On Sunday, Mercy defeated LIU Post, 2-1.

With the weekend's action, the Mavericks improved to 6-21-1 overall and 3-9 in the ECC, while the Pioneers moved to 11-13 and 4-4 in conference play.

Sat. - Game 1: LIU Post 7, Mercy 0

The Pioneers scored three runs in the third and fifth innings enroute to moving to 2-0 on the Mavericks this year (after Friday afternoon's 2-1 victory).

Senior Ray Thaisz (Staten Island, N.Y.) got the start and pitched 5.0 innings and surrendered six runs (five earned) on nine hits. On the other side, Mike Eckerle threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout for LIU Post, striking out 13 batters.

Sat. - Game 2: Mercy 1, LIU Post 0

The only run in the game came in the top of the first inning as Mercy junior Jesus Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y.) single to center field, to drive home senior Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y.).

Mavericks' freshman starter Christian Hock (Trumbull, Conn.) was incredible, throwing a complete-game, six-hit shutout. He struck out three.

Sunday - Mercy 2, LIU Post 1

LIU scored on a homer in the second inning off the bat of Anthony Corona to take a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mercy found the tying run as Bock recorded a sacrifice fly, bringing home sophomore DH Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).

The sacrifice fly worked again for the Mavericks as in the bottom of the eighth inning, junior Jeremy Lovera (Carmel, N.Y.) drove the ball to right field to bring home Bock.

On the hill, Mercy sophomore starter Joseph O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.) was stellar, pitching 8.0 innings and giving up just one run on three hits, keeping his team in the ballgame the whole afternoon. Rookie James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y.) came out of the bullpen to secure his first collegiate save.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, April 9 when they host East Stroudsburg at 3:00 p.m.
