Baseball Opens Final Series of Season Versus Dowling Today

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (May 3, 2013) - On Friday afternoon, the Mercy College baseball team began their final series of the 2013 season at Dowling College in Brookhaven, N.Y. The Mavericks dropped the opener to the Golden Lions, 5-1. With the win, Dowling improved to 20-18-1 and 13-8 in the ECC, while Mercy slipped to 7-35-1 and 4-17 in the league.

The Golden Lions scored three runs in the first two innings against Mercy junior starter Joseph O'Neill (Long Beach, N.Y.). The Mavericks grabbed a run back in the fifth on a Michael Dern RBI groundout.

O'Neill hurled eight innings and gave up five runs, although none were earned. He struck out two.

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow (Sat.) when they host Dowling in doubleheader action beginning at 12:00 p.m.  Mercy's five seniors -- Ray Thaisz, Andrew Bock, Nick Papas, Tom Cummings and Chris Mignoli -- will be honored on Senior Day.
