Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Dowling on Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 4, 2013) - The Mercy College baseball team split a doubleheader with Dowling College on Saturday, falling in game 1 (3-1) and winning game 2 (1-0). The Mavericks' record now stands at 8-36-1 overall and 5-18 in the East Coast Conference, while the Golden Lions' ledger now stands at 21-19-1 and 13-9 in the ECC.

Game 1: Dowling 3, Mercy 1

In game one, both teams would remain scoreless until the top of the third when Dowling's Andrew Abreu doubled to left center to score two runs. The Golden Lions added another run in the top of the fourth to make the lead, 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Mavericks' outfielder Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y. / Valley Stream North) would double down the left field line and Steve Longo (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) would then drive home Bock. However, the Mercy bats would then go cold as the Golden Lions took Game 1, 3-1.

For the game, Bock went 3 for 4, while Longo went 1 for 3 with an RBI. On the mound, Ray Thaisz (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph By The Sea) got the loss, but only surrendered three runs.
 

Game 2: Mercy 1, Dowling 0

In game two, the lone Mercy run came in the bottom of the fourth after Longo doubled to left field. Bryan Grieg (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) then moved Longo to third on a sacrifice fly, which was followed by Chris Salvo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Lakeland) singling Longo home for the eventual winning run.

In all for Mercy, Longo went 1 for 3, while Salvo went 1 for 2 with an RBI. On the mound, Tom Cummings (Coatesville, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) pitched a complete game shutout and picked up the victory.

 

Head Coach Bob Greiner and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow as they will travel to Brookhaven, N.Y. to face the Dowling Golden Lions in the 2013 season finale.
