White Leads Volleyball to Pair of Wins Over Georgian Court, USciences

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2013) – Junior outside hitter Brenna White (Gardnerville, Nev.) posted a pair of double-doubles to lead the Mercy College Mavericks to victories over Georgian Court University, 3-0, and the University of the Sciences, 3-1, at the East Stroudsburg University Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

White kept up her torrid start to the season, smashing 18 kills against the Lions and posting her first 20-kill effort with 21 against the Devils, raising her season average to an impressive 4.81 kills per set.

Mercy evens its record at 2-2 on the season, while Georgian Court starts the season 0-2 and USciences falls to 0-3. 

 

Mercy 3, Georgian Court 0

The Mavericks dominated the first match of the day from opening serve, posting a .324 hitting percentage over the entire match while limiting the Lions to a meager .126.  Mercy took the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores and closed things out in the third set, 25-17.

White's 18 kills led the Ducks, while her .350 hitting percentage ranked second behind senior outside hitter Nicolette Gebhardt (Bloomingburg, N.Y.), who posted a .375 on 10 kills.  Junior setter McKenna Ronan (Chandler, Ariz.) averaged a season-high 11.3 assists per set and nailed her only attack for a kill, while junior middle blocker Sonia Morales (San Fernando, Calif.) made seven block assists.  White completed her double-double with a team-high-tying 12 digs as sophomore middle blocker Hana Brucaj (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) also tallied 12 and senior libero Kirstie Zubiate (Salinas, Calif.) added 10.

Junior Jhoan Agosto Rivera (Carolina, Puerto Rico) led the Lions with 11 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, while junior Jaslene Lopez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) made 17 assists and senior Gabriela Berrios-Hernandez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) recorded 15 digs.

 

Mercy 3, USciences 1

The Mavericks narrowly dropped the first set in Game Two, 25-23, despite the Devils posting a .000 hitting percentage.  Mercy responded by tallying a .250 hitting percentage on 14 kills to take the second set by the same score. 

Mercy rode the momentum through the third set, winning 25-19 to take the 2-1 match lead.  As the fourth set wound down, the Mavericks found themselves trailing, 19-23, and facing an undesirable fifth set.  They stepped up in the clutch, however, to take the final six points and win the match, 3-1.

White tallied her first 20-kill match of the year with a 21-kill effort and made it a double-double with 16 digs, while Gebhardt added 15 kills on a team-leading .325 hitting percentage.  The Mavericks combined for an impressive 11.5 total blocks, led by eight block assists by Morales, while Ronan made 34 assists and senior libero Mallorie Hopkins (Commerce, Calif.) led the squad with 18 digs, with Zubiate adding another 11.

Sophomore outside hitter Desirae Lair (Las Vegas, Nev.) and senior outside hitter Diana Solomon (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) led the Devils with nine kills apiece, with Solomon just missing the double-double while leading the team with 17 digs.  Freshman setter Meghan Neff (Wilmington, Del.) made 32 assists, while senior defensive specialist Coral Holly (Charlestown, R.I.) and junior outside hitter Amanda DeAngelo (Vestal, N.Y.) each recorded 12 digs and sophomore libero Nicole Rivera (Pittsford, N.Y.) added 11.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks will hit the court again next weekend as they play a tri-match with Dominican (N.Y.) College (0-2) and host Southern Connecticut State University (0-6) on Saturday, Sept. 14.
