DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2017) – Powered by two goals from junior Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 4-0 shutout victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-10) snap a six-game losing streak with the win, while the Spartans (5-8) see their three-game winning streak come to an end. Mercy also set a season high with four goals in the contest.
Robbins finished with a team-high four shots on goal and now has a team-high six goals on the year. Senior Olivia Kelly (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore Catherine Brudi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) also scored for the Mavericks. Juniors Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and Breanna Morrow (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) and sophomore Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR) contributed assists and junior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) made seven saves to earn the shutout victory.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Jacqueline Dowling who had a team-high three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Suzanne Clarke made nine saves in a losing effort.
Mercy looked to get back to their winning ways and got off to a good start, forcing Clarke to make six saves in the first 18 minutes of action. The Mavericks finally broke through in the 18th minute when Robbins scored off a rebound to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks continued to dominate in the opening half and increased their lead to 2-0 in the 30th minute when Brudi scored off an assist from Morrow to give Mercy a two-goal cushion. The score remained 2-0 at halftime as the Mavericks held an 11-2 edge in shots.
The second half saw the Mavericks waste little time in getting on the board as Robbins added her second goal of the day following a pass from Williams that gave Mercy a 3-0 lead. Pettit came up with five saves in the frame and the Mavericks continued to apply pressure, scoring the final goal of the game in the 66th minute to secure the win. Kelly scored by deflecting in a long ball sent in by Anderson to put the game away.
Mercy held a 16-9 edge in shots and a 15-12 advantage in penalty corners.
