Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Serna Fires Two Shots as No. 23 Women's Soccer Plays at No. 12 LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2017) – Despite a team-high two shots from senior Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills), the No. 23 Mercy College women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to ECC foe No. 12 LIU Post on Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Park.

The Mavericks (12-2, 5-1 ECC) drop their first ECC game and see their ten-game winning streak come to an end, while the Pioneers (12-1-1, 5-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.

Serna finished with two shots and redshirt sophomore RaeAnn Ioannou (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) added a shot. Freshman Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made the start in goal and played the first half with one save to take the loss. Senior Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made one save in the second half for the Mavericks.

LIU Post received two goals from Julia Duffy, while Hillevi Eklow earned the win in goal.

In a contest that featured limited scoring opportunities between two nationally-ranked teams, the Pioneers made the most of their first chance in the 18th minute. Duffy took a ball that got by the goalie coming out and fired into an empty net to put LIU Post up 1-0.

It remained 1-0 with Torres making a save in the 37th minute and at halftime the two teams went into the intermission with the hosts up 1-0.

The second half saw Price make a save on a Duffy shot in the 61st minute to keep it 1-0. Serna and Ioannou followed with shots of their own, but the Mavericks were unable to put a shot on goal. LIU Post scored an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Duffy scored again, off an assist from Alice Schonfeldt, that put the Pioneers up 2-0.

LIU Post would hold on the rest of the way as they held Mercy without a shot on goal for the entire game.

The Pioneers held a 10-3 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 21st when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
