Bryan Scores Game-Winning Goal as Field Hockey Earns Third Straight Win With 1-0 Triumph Over Belmont Abbey

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct.19 2017) – Led by the game-winning goal from junior Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) in the 59th minute of action, the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 1-0 victory over ECAC Division II Field Hockey League foe Belmont Abbey College on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (5-10, 2-7 ECAC) pick up their third consecutive win, while the Crusaders (7-8, 2-6 ECAC) have dropped three games in a row.

Bryan led the Mavericks offense with one goal, while sophomore Sabrina Anderson dished out one assist in the win. Junior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y. / Sachem North) recorded three shots on goal, while junior Angela Robbins (Lindwood, N.J. / Mainland Regional) fired off three shots. Junior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) played full 70 minutes in cage and recorded two saves to record the Mavericks third consecutive shutout.

Belmont Abbey was led by Demetria Barrow and Angelina Perrone who both recorded one shot on goal. Paige Hinds was in net for the Crusaders, recording four saves in the losing effort.

Mercy looked to pick up their second conference win of the season and came out strong, recording two shots and four penalty corners in the first half of play. Despite both teams forcing penalty corners and keeping offensive pressure, neither team was able to find the back of the net, holding the score 0-0 entering halftime.

The Crusaders entered the second half on a mission to score, as they were able to record three penalty corneres and one shot on goal in the first eight minutes of action. The Mavericks then began to force the offensive pressure, as they recorded three shots and forced three penalty corners in the next four minutes. The Mavericks were then able to draw another corner after a Mercy timeout, allowing Bryan to put the Mavericks on the board off of a pass from Anderson at the top of the circle. The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead with twelve minutes on the clock.

Despite recording three penalty corners and one shot on goal, the Crusaders were unable to get past Pettit and the Mavericks defense, allowing the Mavericks to earn the victory.

Mercy held a 9-4 edge in shots, and a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, October 22nd when they host Lindenwood University at 11 a.m.
