DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2017) – Despite a goal from junior Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) and nine saves from junior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to ECAC Division II Field Hockey League foe Lindenwood University on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior the game Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill recognized seniors Breanna Morrow (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), Olivia Kelly (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Kimberly Sands (Bethel, Conn./Immaculate), Samantha Perez (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Rachel Gumowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst).
The Mavericks (5-11, 2-8 ECAC) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Lions (12-2, 7-1 ECAC) have won five games in a row.
Robbins now has a team-high seven goals on the year, while sophomore Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR HS) and freshman Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) also recorded a shot on goal. Pettit made nine saves, while freshman Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) earned a defensive save.
Lindenwood received two goals from Noor Fons and a goal from Graycen Dave. Goalkeeper Skylar Starbeck made two saves to earn the win.
The opening eight minutes of the contest saw neither team record a shot. However, Fons changed that in the 9th minute of action when she sent a high shot into the back of the cage to put the Lions up 1-0.
Pettit continued to play well for the Mavericks in the cage and held off Lindenwood for the remainder of the half as the Lions headed into halftime up 1-0.
The second half saw Anderson and Anthony record shots on goal in the first three minutes of the frame, but Starbeck was up to the challenge and it remained 1-0. Lindenwood went on to increase their lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute when Dave scored following a corner.
The Lions tacked on another goal in the 51st minute when Fons scored her second of the day to give Lindenwood a 3-0 advantage. The Mavericks finally got on the board in the 64th minute when Robbins scored off a breakaway on a hard shot into the cage that made it 3-1. Mercy looked for more but were unable to break through and the Lions emerged victorious.
Lindenwood held an 18-8 edge in shots and a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 25th when they play at New Haven at 7 p.m.
