WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 25, 2017) – Led by the game-winning goal in the 46th minute from senior Kimberly Sands (Bethel, Conn./Immaculate), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 1-0 victory over University of New Haven on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (6-11) have won four of their last five games, while the Chargers (0-12) remain winless on the year.
Sands scored her first goal of the season, while junior Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) added an assist. Junior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) played the full 70 minutes in the cage and made two saves to earn the shutout win.
New Haven received a shot on goal from Samantha Errera and Shelby Card. Goalkeeper Natalie Shaker made six saves in a losing effort.
The two teams traded shots on goal early on, but neither team could score in the opening half. Junior Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) had a chance in the 30th minute that was stopped by Shaker. Mercy and New Haven headed into halftime with the Mavericks holding a 7-4 edge in shots.
The second half saw Mercy open the frame with two shots on goal by Robbins. The Mavericks finally scored in the 46th minute when Robbins fed a corner to the top of the arc and Sands fired into the cage to put Mercy up 1-0.
Amell made a save in the 50th minute to keep it 1-0, but the Mavericks defense held the Chargers without a shot on goal the rest of the way to secure the win.
Mercy held a 13-10 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 28th when they play at Molloy at 1 p.m.
