SEAFORD, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2017) - Powered by goals from juniors Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y. / Sachem North) and Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J. / Mainland Regional), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 2-0 victory over Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Cedar Creek Park.
The Mavericks (7-11) conclude their 2017 campaign with the win, tying the program record in wins for the season. The Lions (0-17) remain winless on the year.
Robbins led the Mavericks offense with one goal and five shots, while Williams added one goal and two shots for the Mavericks. Junior Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) dished out an assist. Sophomore Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa / Wyoming Valley West) added a defensive save for the Mavericks defense. Junior Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Lewis Palmer) recorded 35 minutes in the cage with six saves. Junior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y. / Greene) finished out the contest with three saves in 35 minutes of action.
Jessica Waszczak led the Lions offense with seven shots. Zoe Norton added four shots for Molloy. Tara Byrnes played a full 70 minutes in cage and recorded nine saves for the loss.
Mercy looked to pick up their second consecutive win this afternoon, as they came out forcing offensive pressure. Within the first minute of action, Robbins was able to draw a corner for the Mavericks and allow Bryan to fire off a shot on goal. Robbins eventually found the back of the cage when she nailed the back of the cage with 17 minutes on the clock, putting the Mavericks up 1-0. Despite drawing ten penalty corners and taking eight shots, the Lions were unable to get past Pettit and the Mavericks defense. Mercy entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Lions entered the second half continuing the offensive pressure, as Lauren Keller recorded a shot in the first 30 seconds of action. The Mavericks answered back and were able to draw a penalty corner. A hard shot from Bryan at the top of the circle allowed for Williams to get the deflection past the Molloy goalkeeper, putting the Mavericks up 2-0. The Lions got close to a scoring opportunity later in the half, but a defensive save from Podskoch did not let the Lions get on the board.
Mercy held a 17-16 advantage in shots. Despite the loss, the Lions held a 17-5 edge in penalty corners.
