DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2017) – Powered by five different Mavericks scoring on Senior Day, the Mercy College men's soccer team exploded for six goals in a 6-1 win over ECC opponent Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the contest Head Coach Pedro Velazquez recognized seniors Jose Carvajal (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees), Jose Carlos Arevalo (North Haledon, N.J./William Paterson University), Patricio Laffaye (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Central Christian College), Daniel Watson (London, England/Monroe College), Steven Braccioforte (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), Joseph Giammarusco (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur), Ericson Penate (Reseda, Calif./LA Mission JC), Haxhi Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y./Marlboro), Danny Gavin (Phoenix, Ariz./University of Washington), Adil Gowani (Huntington Station, N.Y./Nassau CC), Facundo Bouciguez (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Florida Memorial) and Kwantarian Van der Lara (Stockholm, Sweden/Marshalltown CC)
The Mavericks (11-4, 6-2 ECC) have their most wins in a season since 2013 and have secured their first ECC Tournament berth since 2013, while the Redhawks (3-12, 1-7 ECC) have dropped six straight games.
Leading Mercy was Verjoni who had two goals, while sophomore Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) added a goal and two assists. Junior Lucca Lacerda (Passos, Brazil/Monroe College) netted a goal and an assist and Giammarusco scored. Redshirt freshman Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT Argentina) also scored and Gavin and Penate also added an assist. Van der Lara made four saves to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan received a goal from Barrington Smith and an assist from Terrell Spencer. John Ciavaglia made seven saves in the first 52:44 minutes of action in a losing effort.
The Mavericks recorded the first shot on goal of the game less than a minute in, but it was the Redhawks who opened the scoring just 1:30 into the game when Smith scored on a shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Roberts Wesleyan looked to have the momentum, but Mercy came right back in the 5th minute when Lacerda sent a ball over to Penate who touched it over to Verjoni who found the back of the net to tie the game up at 1-1.
The Mavericks continued to dominate the action and found the back of the net again the 34th minute when Verjoni scored again off a pass from Rebolledo-Camus that gave Mercy a 2-1 lead. The offense did not stop there for the Mavericks as Lacerda followed with a goal less than a minute later that put Mercy out in front 3-1 heading into halftime.
Rozenblum continued the offensive onslaught for the Mavericks in the 48th minute when he fired a shot well outside the box and into the upper right corner, putting Mercy up 4-1. Giammarusco got into the action in the 52nd minute when he scored his first collegiate goal on Senior Day to put the Mavericks up 5-1. Rebolledo-Camus concluded the scoring on the day with a goal in the 65th minute that helped finish off the Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 23-6 edge in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 25th when they play at Dominican at 3:30 p.m.
