Clark Scores Game-High 19 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts Felician in Home Opener

VALHALLA N.Y. (Nov. 15, 2017) – Despite a game high 19 points from senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College women's basketball team battled throughout before succumbing to Felician University, 60-53, in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at the Westchester Community College.

The Mavericks (2-1) drop their first game of the season to the Golden Falcons. Felician University (1-0) opens up their 2017-2018 with a victory over the Mavericks.

Mercy was led by Clark, who recorded a game high with 19 points and added eight rebounds, two assists, and one block. Senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) ended with thirteen points, a game high nine rebounds, and two assists. Freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick) was the third Maverick to score in double digits, adding ten points, six rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia/John Paul College) added six points, a game high four assists, a game-tying five steals, and one rebound.

Felician was led by Danelle Gibson who netted twelve points and added five steals, five rebounds, one assist and one block. Kristen Smith led the Golden Falcons defense with seven rebounds and two blocks.

The Golden Falcons came out hungry tonight as they were able to record the first four points of the contest. The Mavericks were able to get on the board with help from Keane-Dawes when she was able to record a six point run, giving the Mavericks a 6-4 lead. Wilson then added back to back layups of her own to give the Mavericks a 10-4 lead with 4:09 on the clock. Kameron Stone put Felician on the board, but Mercy answered back with five unanswered points to give them a 15-6 lead after the first quarter.

Four quick points from the Golden Falcons would prove they were still in the game at the start of the second quarter. The next few minutes of play were a back and forth battle between the two teams, until Mercy was able to score six unanswered points to give them a 28-18 lead entering halftime.

The Mavericks were the first to score in the third quarter, however an eight point run from the Golden Falcons would bring the score to 30-26 with seven minutes on the clock. Both teams continued the fight for the lead. Another six point run from Felician would allow for them to bring the game within one point with 2:17 on the clock. The Mavericks were able to record five points throughout the remainder of the quarter, along with the Golden Falcons recording six points. Both teams entered the final quarter with a tie game at 39-39.

Despite scoring a total of 14 points in the final quarter, the Mavericks were unable to overcome the Golden Falcons 21-point quarter and eventually fell 60-53.

The Mavericks shot 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the floor, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from beyond the arc and 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the foul line. Felician shot 35.2 percent (23-of-65) from the floor, 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from behind the arc, and 58.5 percent (10-of-17) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 18th when they host Georgian Court University at Westchester Community College at 1:00 p.m.
