Four Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Hosts Chestnut Hill

VALHALLA, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2017) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 93-80 decision to Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Westchester Community College.

The Mavericks (2-3) have dropped three games in a row, while the Griffins (3-2) move over .500 on the year.

Freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) led Mercy with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) had 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman Anna Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) poured in 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and junior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) netted 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Sophomore Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds.

Chestnut Hill was paced by Vicky Tumasz who had a game high 27 points with seven threes.

The two teams combined for 26 three pointers on the day with the Griffins connecting on 16. Chestnut Hill opened the contest on an 8-0 run leading to a Mercy timeout. Out the timeout, the Mavericks followed with four straight points to make it 8-4. However, the visitors responded with a 19-8 run to take their largest lead of the quarter, 27-12, at the 1:06 mark. Perez nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Chestnut Hill lead to 11, 29-18, at the end of one quarter of play.

Brown opened the second quarter with a trifecta to get the Mavericks within single digits, but the guests went on a 4-0 run to open up a 12-point lead, 33-21, with 8:29 left in the half. Zaborowska made it a 33-24 game with a three, but the Griffins answered with a 9-0 run to increase their advantage to 18, 42-24, with 5:20 left. Mercy continued to battle and would cut the Chestnut Hill lead to 14, 49-35, at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Griffins put the lead back to 16, 56-40, with 8:02 remaining, but the Mavericks would not go down without a fight and went on a 10-0 run to make it a six-point game, 56-50, at the 5:52 mark. Mercy later trailed 64-58 with 3:48 remaining in the frame, but the Griffins would head into the fourth quarter with a 72-63 lead.

Chestnut Hill opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to build the lead to 18, 81-63, and would lead the rest of the way in securing the win.

Mercy shot 40.0 percent (30-of-75) from the floor, 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from downtown and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the foul line. Chestnut Hill shot 44.4 percent (32-of-72) from the field, 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from beyond the arc and 65.0 percent (13-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Monday, November 27th when they host Saint Anselm College at Nyack College at 7 p.m.
