NYACK, N.Y. (Nov. 27, 2017) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team fell to Saint Anselm College, 84-57, in a non-conference matchup on Monday night at Nyack College.
The Mavericks (2-4) drop their fourth straight game, while the Hawks (4-2) increases their win total to four for the season.
The Mavericks were led by junior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y. / Christ the King), who recorded twelve points and two assists. Sophomore Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia / John Paul College) also finished the night with twelve points and added one rebound. Junior Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y. / Francis Lewis) rounded off the double figure scoring with ten points, three rebounds and one block. Senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Midwood) led the Mavericks defense with five rebounds, one steal and one assist.
The Hawks were led by Shannon Ryan who recorded 27 points, ten rebounds, five blocks, three assists and one steal. Clairee Putnam also finished in double figures for the Hawks with eleven points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
The Hawks were led by Ryan in the first period, recording nine points and four rebounds. For the Mavericks, Perez added five points and one assist. Keane-Dawes led the Maverick defense with three rebounds, while Bady shot a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Mercy kept on the Hawks heels as they entered the second quarter trailing, 19-15.
Perez got on board first for the second quarter sinking a three pointer in the first ten seconds of play. However, the Hawks eventually outscored the Mavericks 17-8 in the ten minutes of action. Ryan added six points for Saint Anselm while Ali Glennon had four rebounds. The Mavericks entered halftime trailing 36-23.
The Hawks were the first to score after the half, but it wasn't long until Perez was able to put the Mavericks on the board when she scored successful layup. The Mavericks continued to fight throughout the quarter. However, a seven-point Hawks run would eventually put them up 58-38 entering the final quarter.
Despite scoring a game high total of 19 points in the final quarter, the Mavericks were unable to overcome the Hawks 26-point quarter and eventually fell, 84-57.
The Mavericks shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the floor, 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from beyond the arc and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the foul line. Saint Anselm shot 63.9 percent (39-of-61) from the floor, 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from behind the arc, and 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 30th when they take on Nyack College at 7p.m. at Nyack College.
