NYACK, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2017) – Powered by a team high 15 points from junior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y. / Christ the King), the Mercy College women's basketball team earned a 68-65 victory over Nyack College on Thursday night at Nyack College.
The Mavericks improve to 3-4 on the year, while the Warriors remain winless on the season and fall to 0-8.
Mercy was led by Perez who shot 9-of-10 for free throws and also dished out two assists and one rebound. Freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick) added fourteen points, grabbed nine rebounds and added one assist. Sophomore Caralie Wilson (Australia / John Paul College) rounded out the double figure scoring with thirteen points, two rebounds, and one assist.
The Warriors were led by Audrey Matteson who finished with a game-high eighteen points and grabbed eight rebounds. Bryanna Brown added fourteen points and nine rebounds for the Warriors.
Nyack was the first to get on the board in the contest, with Jocelin Wright making a layup in the first thirty seconds of action. Senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Midwood) quickly sunk a three point shot to put the Mavericks in the lead. The remainder of the quarter was a back and forth battle, with the score being tied on six separate occasions. A three point shot by Perez with twelve seconds on the clock would give the Mavericks a 14-13 lead entering the second quarter.
The second quarter got off to a slow start, with neither team able to score for the first minute and thirty seconds. Perez broke the silence with another three point show off of an assist from Wilson at the 8:34 mark. It was almost a full minute later that the Warriors got on the board when Janae Bailey made a layup to improve the score to 17-15. The Mavericks were able to record six unanswered points followed by the Warriors answering back, tying the score at 23-23. A three point shot from senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) at the buzzer would give the Mavericks a 26-23 lead entering halftime.
The Mavericks wasted no time in the third quarter, scoring five points before the Warriors could get on the board. Another eleven point run later in the quarter would give the Mavericks the 42-27 lead that they were looking for. The Warriors did not give up, as they were able to get the score to 48-35 by the end of the quarter.
Despite the Warriors recording their highest scoring quarter of the game in the final ten minutes, they were unable to overcome the Mavericks and fell 68-65.
Mercy shot 32.1 percent (17-of-53) from the floor, 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from beyond the arc and 60.5 percent (23-of-38) from the foul line. Nyack shot 28.8 percent (19-of-66) from the field, 19.0 percent (4-of-21) from long distance and 92.0 percent (23-of-25) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks look to make it two wins in a row when they open up East Coast Conference play at NYIT on December 6th at 5 p.m.
