OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2017) – Despite a team high 13 points from senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College women's basketball team opened up ECC play with an 80-49 setback to NYIT on Wednesday night at Recreation Hall.
The Mavericks (3-5, 0-1 ECC) fail to build off their win on Thursday, while the Bears (5-3, 1-0 ECC) open up ECC action with a win.
Clark went 5-of-6 from the field and had four rebounds. Junior Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) added nine points and sophomore Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) netted eight points on 3-of-6 shooting.
NYIT was led by Maia Hood who had a game high 28 points and Taylor Tripptree who had 20 points and ten rebounds.
Mercy opened the contest with an 8-7 lead after a jumper by Clark with 6:33 left in the first quarter. However, the Bears closed the quarter out on a 13-1 run to take the lead for good at 20-9 after the first quarter.
NYIT began the second quarter on a 20-6 run to increase their lead to 25, 40-15, with 1:36 left in the half. The Mavericks continued to battle and would cut the deficit to 21, 41-20, heading into halftime.
The Bears outscored the Mavericks 17-11 in the third quarter to build their lead to 27, 58-31, after three quarters of play. NYIT would cruise the rest of the way in securing their second straight win.
Mercy shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54) from the floor, 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from downtown and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the foul line. NYIT shot 56.9 percent (33-of-58) from the field, 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from long distance and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the charity stripe.
