Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Hosts ECC Foe LIU Post

VALHALLA, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2017) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team suffered a 77-59 setback to ECC foe LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at Westchester Community College.

The Mavericks (3-6, 0-2 ECC) have dropped two ECC games in a row, while the Pioneers (6-4, 2-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.

Junior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) led Mercy with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) added 11 points and five rebounds. Junior Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) ended the contest with ten points and four rebounds.

LIU Post was led by Sasha Patterson who had a game high 33 points and 15 rebounds.

Mercy opened up the game with a 10-8 lead at the 6:04 mark of the first quarter following a Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) trifecta. However, the Pioneers closed the frame on a 16-0 run to build a 24-10 advantage over the Mavericks after one quarter of play.

LIU Post opened the second quarter with another basket to increase the lead to 16, 26-10, before Perez made a layup that ended an 18-0 run by the Pioneers. Mercy cut the deficit to ten, 28-18, following a Bady layup at the 7:49 mark, but the guests answered with an 8-1 run to put the lead at 17, 36-19, with just over two minutes left in the half. LIU Post headed into halftime with a 41-25 lead over the Mavericks following three free throws just before the final buzzer.

Patterson made a layup at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter that gave LIU Post a 50-27 lead. Mercy continued to battle and would end the quarter on a 17-8 run to trim the Pioneers lead to 14, 58-44, heading to the fourth quarter.

LIU Post built the lead back up to 19 in the fourth quarter and would hold a double-digit lead the rest of the way in securing the victory.

Mercy shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from downtown and 60.0 percent (15-of-25) from the foul line. LIU Post shot 42.0 percent (29-of-69) from the field, 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from beyond the arc and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks look to get back in the win column when they play at Chestnut Hill on Tuesday, December 12th at 6 p.m.
