PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Dec. 12, 2017) – Despite double-doubles from sophomore Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) and freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped an 81-76 decision to Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.
The Mavericks (3-7) have dropped three games in a row, while the Griffins (6-5) move over .500 with the win.
Collier recorded her first double-double by way of a career high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting along with 11 rebounds. Brown had a career high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and added ten rebounds. Freshman Anna Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) contributed 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting and senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) rounded out four Mavericks scoring in double figures with ten points.
Chestnut Hill was led by Jaeda Wildgoose who had a team high 17 points, while Cassie Sebold had 15 points and a game high six assists.
Brown nailed a three with just over 30 seconds played to give the Mavericks their lone lead of the game, 3-2. Following a Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) layup at the 8:24 mark of the period the score was tied at 5-5. The Griffins would close the quarter on a 26-10 run to take a 31-15 lead after one quarter of play.
The hosts opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run to increase the advantage to 20, 37-17, with 7:48 remaining before halftime. Mercy answered with five straight points to cut the deficit to 15, 37-22, after a Clark jumper, but Chestnut Hill followed right back with six unanswered to build a game high lead of 21, 43-22, with 3:24 on the clock.
The Mavericks did not back down despite the deficit and closed the half on a 17-7 run to make it an 11-point game, 50-39, at halftime.
The Griffins began the third quarter by increasing the lead back to 16, 59-43, and looked to be pulling away from Mercy. However, the Mavericks came back with another strong close to a quarter, finishing the third quarter on a 17-7 run to get within six, 66-60, entering the fourth quarter.
Mercy began the fourth quarter with four straight points from Zaborowska to make it 66-64 with 7:38 left to play. The Mavericks trailed by just two, 70-68, at the 4:18 mark before the hosts rattled off seven straight points to put the lead to nine, 77-68, with 2:22 left. The deficit proved too much to overcome as Mercy could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Mercy shot 39.4 percent (28-of-71) from the floor, 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from downtown and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the foul line. Chestnut Hill shot 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the field, 37.9 percent (11-of-29) from long distance and 78.3 percent (18-of-23) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, December 15th when they host Daemen College at Nyack College at 6 p.m.
