NYACK, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2017) – Despite a team high fourteen points from freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team suffered a 72-52 setback to ECC foe Daemen College on Friday evening at Nyack College.
The Mavericks (3-8, 0-3 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Wildcats (3-7, 1-1 ECC) pick up their first conference win of the year.
Mercy was led by Brown, who shot 4-of-5 from the charity stripe, while also recording five rebounds and one block. Sophomore Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia / John Paul College) added twelve points, four steals, one assist and one rebound. Sophomore Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn. / Watertown) recorded eight points, four rebounds, and one assist.
The Wildcats were led by Sarah Saba who recorded a game high eighteen points while also adding four rebounds, two assist, two blocks, and two steals. Jordan Heinold added fifteen points and five rebounds. Caroline White added fourteen points and seven rebounds.
The game remained scoreless for the first four minutes of action, until senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) broke the silence for the Mavericks with 6:08 on the clock. Heinold put the Wildcats on the board less than a minute later when she executed off of a defensive rebound. A layup from Brown followed by a three point shot from Wilson allowed the Mavericks to gain a 7-2 lead with 3:57 to go in the quarter. The Wildcats fought back and were able to outscore the Mavericks 12-11 in the ten minutes of play. Wilson led the Mavericks with five points and one steal in four minutes of action for the first quarter. Heinold recorded seven points and two rebounds for the Wildcats.
Sydney Jones put Daemen on the board first in the second quarter, sinking a three point shot within the first minute of play. Junior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y. / Christ the King) responded for the Mavericks with a quick layup to bring the score to 15-13. The Wildcats were able to score eight points before Clark hit a jumper off of a pass from Wilson to bring the score to 25-15 with 5:17 to go. The Wildcats were able to go on another seven point tear at the end of the quarter, allowing them to gain a 32-19 lead entering halftime. The second quarter saw the Wildcats outscore the Mavericks 20-8, with Caroline White leading Daemen with seven points and four rebounds.
The Wildcats opened up the third quarter with a quick six points, before Perez was able to sink a free throw to put the Mavericks on the board. The Wildcats were able to record seven unanswered points to give them a 45-20 lead with 3:59 on the board. Despite six unanswered points from the Mavericks, they trailed 50-28 entering the final quarter.
Despite the Mavericks outscoring the Wildcats 24-22 in the final quarter, the Mavericks were unable to overcome the deficit and eventually fell 72-52 to the Wildcats.
Mercy shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the floor, 10.5 percent (2-of-19) from downtown and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the foul line. Daemen shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64) from the field, 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from beyond the arc and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the charity stripe.
