NYACK, N.Y. (Dec. 17, 2017) – Despite a game high 21 points from sophomore Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) and a double-double from freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 97-66 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon at Nyack College.
The Mavericks (3-9, 0-4 ECC) remain winless in ECC play, while the Redhawks (7-4, 3-1 ECC) have won two games in a row.
Collier added seven rebounds and went 5-of-11 from the floor. Brown finished with 16 points and ten rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Lucy Covley who had a team high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
The Redhawks opened the contest with the first 12 points to take a 12-0 lead at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter. Mercy responded with back-to-back threes from Anna Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) and Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) to make it 12-6 with 4:59 left in the opening quarter. Roberts Wesleyan followed with eight straight points to increase the lead to 14, 20-6, and would hold a 12-point lead, 24-12, after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Redhawks open the frame on a 6-0 run to build an 18-point lead, 30-12. Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy) drained a three to get the Mavericks within 15, but the visitors came back on an 11-2 run to build a 41-17 advantage at the 4:44 mark. Collier drained a pair of free throws right before halftime to send Mercy to halftime down 46-27.
Roberts Wesleyan outscored the Mavericks 26-12 in the third quarter to take a commanding 72-39 lead after three quarters. The Redhawks would hold a double-digit lead the rest of the way in securing the win.
Mercy shot 34.3 percent (23-of-67) from the floor, 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from long distance and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 48.7 percent (37-of-76) from the field, 38.2 percent (13-of-34) from downtown and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, December 30th when they host Concordia College at 12 p.m. at SUNY Purchase.
