DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2017) – Despite the team-leading third goal of the season from junior Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional), the Mercy College field hockey team suffered a 6-1 setback to ECAC Division II Field Hockey League foe Limestone College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-5, 0-4 ECAC) fail to build off their win from yesterday, while the Saints (5-0, 3-0 ECAC) remain unbeaten on the year and sweep the season series with Mercy.
Robbins recorded two shots on goal, while sophomore Catherine Brudi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) notched a defensive save and a shot on goal. Junior Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made the start in goal and made ten saves in the first 59:21 of the contest to take the loss.
Limestone received two goals from Kate Remley and a goal apiece from Cassidy Coates, Kelly Diplock, Kate Norman and Roos van den Berg. Tabria Cochran played the first 59:21 in goal and made one save to earn the win.
Mercy looked to build off their win from yesterday, but it was the Saints who got on the board first in the 4th minute of action. Diplock fired a shot that deflected off a Mercy defender and into the cage, giving Limestone and early 1-0 lead.
Amell would make two saves and Brudi added a defensive save to keep the score at 1-0 until Remley scored her first of the day on a penalty stroke in the 15th minute to put Limestone ahead 2-0. The score stayed at 2-0 heading into halftime as Amell made four more saves in the frame.
Remley began the scoring for the Saints in the second half with another penalty stroke goal in the 42nd minute to give Limestone a 3-0 advantage. The Saints went on to score three more goals to increase their lead to 6-0 in the 62nd minute.
Mercy broke through with 22 seconds left in the game when Robbins fired a shot into the left corner of the cage to get the Mavericks on the board. Timeout would run out on Mercy and the Saints emerged victorious.
Limestone held a 25-5 edge in shots and a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Head Coach Deirdre O'Neill and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, September 22nd at Lindenwood University at 6 p.m. Eastern.
