BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 27, 2017) – Despite a near double-double from junior Brooke Runge(Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest), the Mercy College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (16-25, 11-25, 17-25) setback to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Wednesday night at Hubbell Gym.
The Mavericks (3-10, 0-3 ECC) drop their third straight ECC match, while the Purple Knights (5-8, 2-1 ECC) move over .500 in ECC play with the win.
Runge concluded the night with 15 assists and seven digs, while senior Sa'Naya Johnson(Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) added a team-high six kills. Junior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Monroe College) contributed a team-high ten digs.
Bridgeport was led by Bruna Santos who had ten kills.
The opening set of the night saw the Purple Knights jump out to a 10-5 lead and looked to be on their way to an easy opening set win. However, the Mavericks responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set up at 11-11, forcing a Bridgeport timeout. Out of the timeout, the hosts regrouped and went on a 10-2 run to build a 21-13 lead and did not look back in taking the first set, 25-16.
Mercy scored the first point in the second set, but the Purple Knights came back with a 12-3 run to take a 12-4 lead. Bridgeport led the rest of the way and took the second set, 25-11.
The Mavericks looked to prolong the match and were down one, 15-14, after a Johnson kill. The Purple Knights went on to end the set on a 10-3 run to close out the set and match.
Mercy ended the night hitting -.021 with 19 kills and 34 digs, while Bridgeport hit .292 with 38 kills and 49 digs.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 30th when they take on Nyack and Saint Rose at Nyack starting at 11 a.m.
