NYACK, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2017) – Despite a team-high 13 kills on the day from senior Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Nyack College (13-25, 17-25, 24-26) and a 3-1 decision to College of Saint Rose (12-25, 25-20, 14-25, 17-25) on Saturday afternoon at Nyack College.
The Mavericks fall to 3-12 overall. Saint Rose improves to 7-8 on the year and Nyack College improves to 4-14 overall.
Nyack 3, Mercy 0
The opening match of the day for the Mavericks saw the Warriors jump out to a 25-13 lead in the opening set, giving Nyack a 1-0 advantage for the match.
Mercy recorded nine kills in the second set and sported a .222 hitting percentage in the set. The Mavericks were able to get their offense going in the second set, but it was not enough as the Mavericks fell 25-17 in the second set.
The Mavericks would not go down without a fight, as they showed their offensive talent in the third set. The final set saw the teams go back-and-forth. The Mavericks were able to score a afternoon high of 24 points in the third set, but it was not enough as they Warriors were able to take the 26-24 victory.
Johnson led the Mavericks with six kills and nine digs. Junior Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Demarest) added a team-high 14 digs and 20 assists.
Nyack was led by Alexus Winters who recorded 17 digs and 12 kills.
Saint Rose 3, Mercy 1
The final match of the day saw the Mavericks fall, 25-12, in the opening set. Mercy continued their fight in the second set and hit a match-high .098 and recorded 10 kills in the frame in earning a, 25-20, win to tie the match up at 1-1.
Saint Rose battled back in the third set, winning the set, 25-14, after recording 14 kills and a .310 hitting percentage.
Saint Rose went on to earn the win in the fourth set, 25-17, to close out the match in four sets.
Johnson led the Mavericks with seven kills. Freshman Courtney Gebhardt (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) had six kills and six digs in the contest. Junior Neysha Gonzalez (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Monroe College) finished with a team-high 17 digs. Freshman Adriana Lopez-Soto(Gurabo, Puerto Rico / Notre Dame HS) added 12 digs and three kills. Runge also contributed 29 assists in the contest.
Saint Rose was led by Tina Ceriello who recorded 26 digs, while Brenna Goebel added 14 kills.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 3rd when they take on Queens College at Dobbs Ferry High School for their Dig Pink Match at 7pm.
