Brown Records Team-High 12 Points as Women's Basketball Hosts Molloy

NYACK, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2018) – Despite a team high 12 points from freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 50-40 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Bowman Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (6-11, 2-6 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Lions (8-9, 3-4 ECC) have won two straight games.

Brown also added nine rebounds and senior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) contributed 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) nearly recorded a double-double with eight points and ten rebounds.

Molloy was led by Melody Prichard who had a game high 13 points, while Ihnacinse Grady had 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Mercy opened the contest with a 3-1 lead after a Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) triple at the 7:20 mark of the first quarter. The guests followed with an 11-0 run to take a 12-3 lead with 1:33 remaining in the quarter. The Lions headed into the second quarter with a 14-5 lead.

The Mavericks came out with something to prove in the second quarter, beginning the period on a 12-2 run to take the lead back at 17-16 with 6:33 remaining before halftime. Molloy would end the half on a 10-2 run to take a 26-19 lead at halftime.

Mercy came out of the locker rooms looking to get back into the game and went on a 9-0 to begin the quarter to take a 28-26 lead with 6:33 left in the frame, leading to a Molloy timeout. Out of the timeout, the Lions ensued with a 13-0 run to retake the lead and build it up to 11, 39-28, at the 2:47 mark. Molloy headed into the fourth quarter up 41-31.

The Mavericks started strong again in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to three, 41-38, with 6:01 left, forcing a Lions timeout. Following the timeout, Molloy pulled away with an 8-1 run that increased the visitors lead to ten, 49-39, with just 28 seconds left. The Lions held on the rest of the way in securing the win.

Mercy shot 28.6 percent (14-of-49) from the floor, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from beyond the arc and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from the foul line. Molloy shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from downtown and 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks look to get back in the win column when they host University of Bridgeport on Saturday, January 20th at 12 p.m. at College of Mount Saint Vincent.
