Brown Scores Team-High 20 Points as Women's Basketball Plays at Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2018) – Despite a team high 20 points from freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped an 81-46 decision to ECC foe Daemen College on Friday night at Lumsden Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (6-13, 2-8 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Wildcats (8-12, 5-5 ECC) improve to .500 in ECC play.

Brown added three assists and 3-of-5 from downtown, while freshman Anna Zaborowska (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) contributed eight points and five rebounds. Senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) ended the night with seven points and five rebounds.

Daemen was led by Sarah Saba who had a game high 21 points.

Mercy got off to a strong start taking an 8-3 lead at the 5:08 mark of the first quarter following a Brown layup. However, the Wildcats ended the frame on a 16-4 run to take a 19-12 lead after one quarter of play.

Zaborowska opened the second quarter with a layup to get the Mavericks within five, 19-14, but the hosts responded with seven straight points to build a 12-point lead, 26-14, with 8:13 remaining in the half. A three-pointer from Zaborowska cut the Daemen lead to eight, 32-24, at the 5:12 mark, but Daemen answered with a 13-2 run to head into halftime with a 45-26 lead.

The Wildcats began the third quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 56-26 lead with 6:25 on the clock. Daemen would carry a 63-35 lead into the fourth quarter after holding Mercy to just nine points in the quarter.

The Wildcats built the lead to a game high 41 points, 78-37, with 3:55 remaining and would cruise the rest of the way in securing the win.

Mercy shot 25.4 percent (16-of-63) from the floor, 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from downtown and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from the foul line. Daemen shot 39.2 percent (29-of-74) from the field, 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from beyond the arc and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 59-36 edge on the glass and a 28-6 edge in bench points.
