Wilson and Brown Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays at Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2018) – Despite sophomore Caralie Wilson (Gold Coast, Australia./John Paul College) and freshman Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 77-53 decision to Roberts Wesleyan College in an ECC matchup on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks (6-14, 2-9 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Redhawks (15-6, 9-2 ECC) have won four games in a row.

Wilson had a team high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from downtown. Brown added ten points and five rebounds and senior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) contributed nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore Holly Sanders (Chicago, Ill./Simeon Career Academy) netted eight points and four rebounds.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Lucy Covley who had a game high 20 points, while Emily Miller had 17 points and 18 rebounds.

The hosts opened the contest on a 9-0 run to take a 9-0 lead with 6:23 left in the first quarter. Mercy cut the deficit to eight, 12-4, after two free throws from Keane-Dawes before the Redhawks rattled off eight straight points to take a 20-4 lead with 3:18 left in the frame. Roberts Wesleyan built the lead up to 21, 28-7, and headed into the second quarter with a 28-9 lead.

The second quarter saw the Redhawks begin the quarter on an 18-7 run to increase their lead to 30, 46-16, with 3:37 left in the half. The Mavericks ended the half on a 7-0 run, capped off by an Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) three, to head into halftime down 46-23.

Mercy cut the deficit to 20, 50-30, at the 5:51 mark of the third quarter following a Sanders layup. Roberts Wesleyan would end the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 60-32 lead after three quarters of play.

The hosts increased the lead to a game high 35 points in the fourth quarter and would cruise the rest of the way in securing their fourth straight win.

Mercy shot 28.6 percent (18-of-63) from the floor, 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from downtown and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 41.9 percent (31-of-74) from the field, 37.0 percent (10-of-27) from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the charity stripe. The Redhawks held a 54-35 edge on the boards and a 34-14 advantage in paint points.

Head Coach Jim Harter and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, January 31st when they host NYIT at 6 p.m. at Nyack College.
