Rebolledo-Camus Scores Game-Winning Goal in 109th Minute to Lead No. 17 Men's Soccer to First Win Over LIU Post Since 2010

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2018) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 109th minute from junior Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College), the No. 17 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 3-2 double-overtime win over ECC foe LIU Post for the first time since 2010 on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (8-1-1, 5-1 ECC) have won four games in a row and sit in a tie for first in the ECC standings, holding the tiebreaker over St. Thomas Aquinas. The win over LIU Post is the first since 2010 when Head Coach Pedro Velazquez made seven saves in net as the starting goalkeeper to earn the win in a 2-1 overtime victory on October 23, 2010. The Pioneers (8-4, 4-2 ECC) have dropped two games in a row.

Junior Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino) led the Mavericks with two goals and now has five goals on the year. Rebolledo-Camus recorded his fourth goal of the year and added an assist. Junior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) and sophomore Nigel Hawthorne (Queens, N.Y./Millersville University) both dished out assists and sophomore Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made three saves to earn the win.

LIU Post received two goals from Lukas Ostermann and Oliver Hessner Hansen made eight saves to take the loss.

Mercy had good scoring chances early as Mangada sent a pair of shots just wide right of the net and Hessner Hansen made a pair of stops on shots by Mariglen Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) and Achondo. The game remained scoreless until the 24th minute when Tom Stenberg sent a cross into the middle for Ostermann who fired the ball into an empty net to put the Pioneers up 1-0.

It remained 1-0 until the 39th minute when Rebolledo-Camus sent a cross to Achondo, who fired a shot from the top of the box and into the net to make it 1-1. The score remained 1-1 heading into halftime with Mercy holding a 9-2 edge in shots.

The Mavericks continued to dominate the action in the second half, but Hessner Hansen made two early saves to keep the game tied at 1-1. LIU Post took their second lead of the game in the 72nd minute when Mike Sutton sent a cross into the middle from the right side and Ostermann headed the ball into the lower right to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.

Hessner Hansen made three more saves as the Mavericks looked for the equalizer, but Mercy would finally tie the game up with 26 seconds left in regulation. Achondo headed in a cross from Hawthorne to even the game at 2-2 and the teams would need overtime to settle the contest.

Williams made a save in the first overtime period to keep the Pioneers off the board and the teams would head into a second overtime.

Williams stopped another shot in the second overtime before Mangada fed Rebolledo-Camus a thru ball and the junior beat Hessner Hansen one-on-one with a shot to the right to give the Mavericks the 3-2 overtime win.

Mercy held a 24-6 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 17th when they play at Roberts Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
